Lidiia, 98, walked 10 kilometres from the partially occupied settlement of Ocheretyne in Donetsk Oblast to Ukrainian-controlled territory.
The National Police of Ukraine reported that the woman was forced to leave the house she had built herself when the Russians razed it to the ground.
Lidiia started her journey to Ukraine-controlled territory with her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. At some point they had to separate, and the elderly woman had to continue her way under constant shelling.
She claims that she fell numerous times, exhausted, took a breather, and then proceeded on her way. Ukrainian soldiers found the woman in the evening and handed her over to the White Angel evacuation group.
“At the peak of the hostilities, the pensioner amazingly remained alive and unharmed,” law enforcement personnel claim.
Lidiia is currently in an evacuee shelter, where she is quite safe. The elderly woman claims that, despite the difficult journey, she feels well.
“I survived that war [World War II – ed.] and now I am experiencing this war. I have nothing now,” she said.
Law enforcement personnel located the woman’s family members who had also managed to leave the zone of active combat. It is reported that the elderly woman would soon have the opportunity to reunite with her family.
