7 EU states to attend Putin’s inauguration, including France – Reuters

Not all EU member states have decided to ignore Vladimir Putin’s so-called inauguration on 7 May, including France, which will be represented at the ambassadorial level.

A European diplomat told the agency on condition of anonymity that 20 EU member states would boycott the Kremlin ruler’s “inauguration”, but the other 7 states would send representatives.

A diplomatic source in Paris separately told Reuters that “France will be represented by its ambassador to Russia”.

The source added that France has previously condemned the repressive conditions under which the elections were held, as well as the organisation of elections in the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia, which Paris considers a violation of international law and the UN Charter.

Background:

  • Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it sees no reason to recognise Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin as the democratically elected and legitimate president of Russia.
  • EU diplomat Josep Borrell is opposed to EU representatives attending the “inauguration” ceremony of the Kremlin ruler. A number of EU states have already announced that they will not attend the inauguration.

After the fraudulent “elections” in Russia, Putin lost his legitimacy as president of that country, so European Pravda no longer uses the term “president” to refer to this person. Here they justify and explain the importance of this change.
