The Hong Kong Observatory will hoist the Standby Signal, No. 1 on Wednesday night as Super Typhoon Doksuri approaches the coastal areas of eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian later this week.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) recorded “higher than normal air pollution levels” due to the “outer subsiding air” brought by the super typhoon.

The Observatory said that “very hot weather” will persist in southern China on Wednesday and Thursday, “with showers and squally thunderstorms possibly triggered by high temperatures.”

It is also expected that the Air Quality Health Index at some monitoring stations might reach “Very High” or “Serious” later on Wednesday, according to the EPD.

“With a health risk category in the “Very High” range or above, children, the elderly and people with existing heart or respiratory illnesses are advised to reduce physical exertion and outdoor activities to a minimum or avoid such activities,” the EPD statement read.

Members of the public are also advised to reduce outdoors activities and time spent outside, especially in areas with heavy traffic.

Typhoon Signal 1

The No.1 signal is the “Standby” signal. It is issued when a tropical cyclone is centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong and may affect the territory.

  • All schools and government services remain open.
  • All public transport remains in service.
  • The government advice is to take the tropical cyclone into account when planning activities and be wary of potential strong winds over offshore waters.
