Russia continues to abuse imprisoned Ukrainian Marchenko – Human Rights Commissioner

Russia continues systematically abusing Ukrainian political prisoner Oleksandr Marchenko who was illegally imprisoned in the Russian Federation in 2020.
Source: Dmytro Lubinets, Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) Commissioner for Human Rights, on Telegram
Quote: “Ukrainian citizen Oleksandr Marchenko, illegally sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in the penal colony No 8 in Ulan-Ude (Buryatia), was sent to solitary confinement for three months on 26 September.
The reason for such a severe punishment was Oleksandr’s alleged non-observance of the established order, namely: violation of dress code. This once again confirms that Ukrainians are treated with prejudice in Russian prisons.
… I call on the world community to help stop Russia’s arbitrary violations of the rights of Ukrainian citizen Oleksandr Marchenko and release him, as well as all illegally imprisoned Ukrainians.”
Details: Apart from that, Oleksandr is constantly threatened with being sent to a mental institution, Lubinets says. Such claims have intensified since his recent meeting with a lawyer.
He has not received letters for over three months because they do not pass the censor. Oleksandr has not even received any of the ordered books and magazines for the last half year. Penal colony employees redirect them to another institution.
In addition, Oleksandr Marchenko is not allowed to make calls. In this way, they [the Russians] try to isolate him from the outside world.
Background:
- Marchenko was detained in December 2018 during a trip to Russian-occupied Donetsk, and later handed over to the FSB at the border. After that, he was placed under administrative arrest for alleged illegal work in Russia, and later a criminal case was opened under the article on arms smuggling.
- In November 2020, Marchenko was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
- Former Ukrainian ombudsman Liudmyla Denisova noted that Marchenko’s rights in Russia were grossly violated, and Ukrainian diplomats were forbidden from meeting with him.
