The UK Ministry of Defence has analysed the situation in the lower Dnipro River, pointing out that Russian artillery has retained significant potential in the area.

Details: Over the past week, UK intelligence has noted that fighting on the banks of the lower Dnipro River has intensified. Ukraine has been paying particular attention to operations in this area, establishing small bridgeheads on the left (eastern) bank, which it has controlled since the summer.

Russia is likely to be on the alert for possible attacks across the river, while it withdrew its troops from the west bank a year ago.

The area is now under the control of Russia’s newly created 18th Combined Arms Army, after some of the units previously in the area were redeployed to the Orikhiv front.

As in most areas, the ability to deliver accurate and intense artillery fire is clearly the decisive factor here. Preliminary indications are that Russia has retained a significant artillery capability within reach of the river.

Background:

  • The UK Ministry of Defence said in September that Russia might have reinforced the 58th Combined Arms Army, which had suffered heavy losses, with additional airborne troops on the Orikhiv front.
  • The ministry also noted that the number of forces involved in this area was relatively small compared to other fronts, but both sides consider it strategically important.
