Lithuanian Foreign Minister considers peace talks in West dangerous

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis has called the views of some Western officials on peace talks between Ukraine and Russia dangerous.

Details: American NBC channel, citing sources, reported in early November that US and European officials had begun closed-door talks with Kyiv on possible peace talks with the Kremlin to end the war.

“My position is that these are very dangerous discussions,” the Lithuanian minister said.

He added that Ukraine must decide for itself whether and when to start such talks.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last week that he was not ready for such talks with Russia until the latter’s troops are withdrawn from the country.

“If Ukraine decides to continue negotiations because it is not provided with enough weapons, this is also our responsibility,” Landsbergis said.

He said that this would primarily increase the threat to the Baltic states.

“In this way, we would jointly reinforce that Russian expansion is a possible means of changing borders on the European continent. Since we are so close to Russia and Belarus, this directly implies an increased threat to us,” Landsbergis said.

Background: In September, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Ukraine could not hold peace talks with Putin because he could not be trusted.

He also said that the war started by Russia could not be stopped by sitting down at the negotiating table.
