Quote from the White House official: “If it passes the Senate, the President will sign this continuing resolution that maintains current funding levels and has no harmful policy riders.”
Details: In addition to the intense fighting over government funding, the official also urged House Republicans to abandon “extreme, partisan appropriations bills” and work with Democrats on full-year appropriations bills.
The official also urged Congress to pass funding for Israel, Ukraine and border security.
Background:
- US President Joe Biden is trying to convince the US Congress to support aid to both Ukraine and Israel and to approve a new US$106 billion aid package, which includes more than US$61 billion in funding for aid to Ukraine.
- But Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the US House of Representatives, insists that the aid packages for Ukraine and Israel be considered by Congress separately, and the “Ukrainian” package be considered together with appropriations for border security with Mexico.
- The White House and the Senate criticised and rejected Johnson’s draft bill on the temporary extension of funding with different terms for different government agencies.
- On 14 November, Jake Sullivan, the US President’s National Security Adviser, said that without the approval of a new large-scale aid package for Ukraine in Congress, the abilities of the US are shrinking every week.
- On 14 November, the US House of Representatives approved a draft on two-stage temporary financing of the government without allocating funds for aid to Ukraine and Israel.
