Romanians’ sympathy for Russia halved over past 10 years, while support for Ukraine and Moldova increases

Russia has been ranked last in terms of positive perception among Romanians, while attitudes towards Ukraine and Moldova have improved.

Details: In the 2013 survey, the UK and Germany were the top countries in terms of positive perception by Romanians, and now Italy and Spain are in first place (81.4% and 82.8% respectively). This time, Germany is in third place, France in fourth, and the UK in fifth.
The United States is perceived positively by 67.5% of Romanians, compared to 70.3% in 2013.
Positive attitudes towards Ukraine increased by several percentage points: from 41.8% in 2013 to 43.3% now. For Moldova, the change is more significant: from 65.7% to 69.2%.
The attitude of Romanians towards Hungary has improved significantly: from 29.3% to 39.7%.
In 2013, 36.8% of respondents had a positive perception of Russia, with only 18.3% viewing Russia in a positive light today. The country was ranked last among those included in the rating.
The share of those who have a positive perception of China has also significantly decreased – from 56.5% to 36.3%.
The survey was conducted by telephone interviews from 23 October to 2 November among a representative sample of 1,100 people. The margin of error is ±3%.
Background:
- Recent polls show that the overwhelming majority of Germans, even those with far-right views, support EU membership.
- Meanwhile, in Poland, half of the population approves of maintaining the support that Ukrainian refugees currently have in the country, but almost 40% are more or less against it.
