Director of the Chief Executive Office Carol Yip and Under Secretary for Security Michael Cheuk will lead 13 undersecretaries and 19 political assistants on a week-long trip to mainland China between November 19-25, according to a government press release issued on Thursday.

The officials are set to spend the first five days in Beijing, where they would study at the National Academy of Governance, before travelling to Nanjing. They will “learn deeply” about China’s history and constitution, as well as the country’s development in innovation and technology, smart city, environmental conservation and tourism, the government said.

It will be the first time that officials of Chief Executive John Lee’s administration will have taken part in a study trip relating to China’s affairs. It would also mark the largest such trip organised by the government.

Lee met the undersecretaries and political assistants and urged them to “seize the learning opportunity” to deepen their understanding of China’s most recent policies and development, the statement read.

“[A]pply what you have learned when engaging with various sectors of society when we devise and implement relevant policy measures in the future,” Lee told the officials.
