Source: Poland’s Rzeczpospolita, citing data from Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science (MES)
Details: The ministry’s data, obtained by the media outlet, indicates that 183,461 students from Ukraine are those who arrived in Poland following the start of the full-scale Russian invasion and enjoy refugee status, with another 103,073 being Ukrainians with no such status but who had been in the country before.
The statistics of the MES reveal differences between the two groups, such as that the largest number of students from Ukraine who moved to Poland before the full-scale war – almost 39,000 – study in secondary schools, and another 32,000 in primary schools.
Over 11,000 refugees are enrolled in higher education institutions, and almost 113,000 are in primary schools. There are 42,500 Ukrainian children in kindergartens, including 28,000 who have refugee status.
Government data indicates that 1,719,257 Ukrainian citizens legally reside in Poland and have war-related refugee status, 35.8% of whom are under the age of 18. Another 1.5 million represent Ukrainians who were in the country before the war.
Background:
- Earlier, the European Union completed all the procedures necessary to extend the temporary protection regime for refugees from Ukraine for one year, from 4 March 2024 to 4 March 2025.
- On 19 September, the European Commission proposed to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians who fled Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and the EU interior ministers reached a political agreement on 28 September.
- Media reports indicated that Poland had raised certain objections to the extension of temporary protection. Warsaw demanded more funding from the EU for refugees. However, the mechanism extension requires a unanimous vote, so vetoing the decision was impossible.
