Memorials to Holodomor victims are being demolished in occupied part of Kherson Oblast

Pravda Ukraine

The Russian occupiers have destroyed 14 memorials to victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine [a man-made famine organised by the Soviet government – ed.] in Ivanivka hromada in the Henichesk district, Kherson Oblast [a hromada is an administrative unit designating a town, village or several villages and their adjacent territories – ed.] .

Details: The occupying administration of Ivanivka hromada posted a photograph showing an act of vandalism. The vandals’ faces had been hidden in advance, so it is not known exactly who destroyed the memorials.

In the post, the Russians refer to the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a “so-called” famine and list adverse weather conditions, poor harvests and Soviet economic and agrarian policies as the reasons why millions of Ukrainians starved to death.

Previously: In 2022, Russian occupiers demolished Ukrainian memorials in the settlement of Hornostaivka. During the occupation of the city of Kherson, they destroyed a plaque commemorating Ruslan Storcheus, the first commander of the Kherson Battalion, who was killed in 2014.

Reference: The Holodomor of 1932-1933 has been recognised by many countries as an act of genocide of the Ukrainian people which the Soviet authorities organised by confiscating harvests from villagers and creating an artificial mass famine in Ukraine.

The confiscation of the grain harvest and all other food products from villagers by the Soviet authorities in 1932-1933 led to millions of deaths. Between 4 and 10.5 million Ukrainians are estimated to have died as a result of the Holodomor.

What is more, the Soviet government had significant grain stocks in reserve which were exported during the Holodomor. It also banned people from exiting the Ukrainian Soviet Republic and refused to accept foreign aid for the starving people.
