Ukraine to give Crimean geographical sites their historical Crimean Tatar names

Ukraine will change the names of the geographic sites in temporarily occupied Crimea to their historical names in the Crimean Tatar language.

Details: The Crimean Tatar language will be used in toponyms of Turkic origin or historical Crimean Tatar names.

Quote: “The preparation of this decision continues to implement the law On the Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and the Decolonisation of Toponymy.”

“The mechanisms that will enable writing toponyms using Latin graphics in the media and scientific works are being agreed now,” the message said.

Names on road signs, new maps and in communication with cartographic service operators and services that work with such signs will also be changed.

The National Commission instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to develop a relevant decision. This issue will be taken care of by the Ministry of Infrastructure together with the Ministry of Reintegration, the Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People and the Institute of National Remembrance, will be responsible for this decision.

Background: The improvement of the Crimean Tatar spelling system will also be facilitated in Ukraine.
