Russia secures deal with Iran to counter Western sanctions

Pravda Ukraine

Russia and Iran have signed a joint declaration on working together to counter Western sanctions imposed on both countries.

Source: Interfax, citing Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, at a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Moscow, as reported by European Pravda.

“We have just signed a declaration on ways and means to counteract, mitigate and compensate for the negative consequences of unilateral coercive measures,” Lavrov said.

The Russian minister said this was an important step to “overcome the illegal sanctions that the United States and its allies have made as a substitute for diplomacy.”

Lavrov’s meeting with the Iranian foreign minister occurred on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting of the five Caspian Sea countries – Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will visit Moscow on Thursday, 7 December. Putin visited Iran in July 2022, and Lavrov visited Tehran in October.

Background:

  • After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Iran and Russia became closer. Both the Russian and Iranian regimes are under numerous Western sanctions.
  • Among other things, Tehran has provided the Russian regime with thousands of kamikaze drones that kill Ukrainian civilians, as well as the technology to produce them. Since last year, there have been unconfirmed reports that Iran could deliver ballistic missiles to Russia.
  • At the end of November, Iran announced the “finalisation” of an agreement with Russia on the supply of Su-35 fighter jets, as well as Mi-28 attack helicopters and Yak-130 trainer aircraft made in Russia.
