Details: Zelenskyy called the conversation in the US Senate “friendly and candid”. He added that he had told the American senators about the current  military and economic situation in Ukraine and the importance of preserving the support of the US.

Quote: “I am grateful to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell for their personal leadership in rallying bipartisan support for Ukraine among U.S. legislators.”

Schumer himself told the correspondents that Zelenskyy’s meeting with the senators was “very powerful”, and the Ukrainian President “explained in detail” what Ukraine needed and how the US could help it protect itself from Russia.

“If he receives the necessary aid, he will win. If we fail, Putin will win and it is very, very dangerous for the United States,” Schumer said as cited by CNN.

The Republican legislators stated that during his speech, Zelenskyy did not interfere in the issue of the protection of the southern border of the US, which is a key stumbling block between the two parties and instead focused on explaining why the American aid was crucial for Ukraine.

“I told Zelenskyy that my number one obligation is protecting my own country as well as helping his, and I feel like the border policy of my country poses a direct threat to the security of the American people,” Lindsay Graham, Republican Senator, told the journalists.

Background:

  • The US Congress is yet to adopt President Joe Biden’s request for additional financing for the aid for Ukraine due to the resistance of some Republicans. On 6 December, the bill about supplying Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan with aid did not pass procedural vote in the Senate.
  • According to sources, Biden’s administration is considering the possibility of concessions in migration policy in order to allocate the new aid for Ukraine and Israel in the bill about additional financing.
