The European Union disbursed the last €1.5 billion of its €18 billion macro-financial assistance package for 2023 to Ukraine on 21 December.

Source: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Twitter, reported by European Pravda.

Details: Announcing the disbursement, von der Leyen said that the EU must reach an agreement to continue to provide Ukraine with the support it needs to “recover, rebuild and reform”.

“We stand by the side of our neighbour, friend and aspiring member,” she said.

In total, the EU has envisaged a €18 billion macro-financial support package for Ukraine through 2023. Together with today’s tranche, these funds have been fully transferred to Kyiv.

Meanwhile, the approval of a €50 billion macro-financial assistance programme for the next four years was delayed due to Hungary’s veto.

However, the European Commission stated that the funds to help Ukraine are available, and a “working decision” is needed to approve the programme.

Background: On 1 February 2024, the European Union will hold a special summit to discuss the allocation of €50 billion in additional aid to Ukraine.
