The academic choral Chapel of Ukrainian Radio performed an impromptu version of the famous Christmas tune Shchedryk (Carol of the Bells) on the Lavra bell tower.

Yuliia Tkach conducted the chapel, reports Suspilne, Ukraine’s public broadcaster

She also took part in the re-enactment concert called Hey, Rozhestvo!, which took place on Christmas Eve at the National Philharmonic of Ukraine.

The event in the Lavra was created with the assistance of the Mykola Leontovych Institute and the National Reserve Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

Ukrainian Shchedryk has long been an integral part of Christmas culture worldwide. In the Western world, the song is known as Carols of the Bells.

Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych wrote an arrangement of the folk song in the early twentieth century. Shchedryk was first performed by the Kyiv University choir in 1916.

In 2022, Shchedryk was performed in the original language at Carnegie Hall in New York. It was the song’s triumphant comeback 100 years after its premiere.

In 2023, the Ukrainian drama of the same name, Shchedryk, was released, telling the story of Ukrainian, Polish and Jewish families during two occupations, by the Soviets and the Nazis.
