The five appeared at Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Courts on Friday. They stood accused of intending to seriously injure an 18-year-old man at Pik Uk Correctional Institution in Sai Kung on December 26, 2023.

The four inmates Bosco Lee, Ho Lik-wun, Li Yuxuan and Brian Lam, aged 19 to 20, did not apply for bail, The Witness reported.

Correctional services officer Tam Lik-chung, 33, sought bail but the bid was rejected by acting principal magistrate Winnie Lau.

Police arrested the five last Wednesday after being notified by the Correctional Services Department (CSD) of a complaint from the family member of an inmate at the maximum security institution, alleging that the inmate had been attacked.

A 54-year-old corrections officer was also arrested last Wednesday but was released without charge.

The incident happened in a stairwell outside an activity room on the first floor of Pik Uk Correctional Institution, according to the case details. Citing sources, local media outlets reported that there were no CCTV cameras at the scene.

Local media outlets also said the victim reportedly suffered anal laceration and rectal perforation. He required surgery and was in hospital, The Witness reported.

The five will appear in court again on April 22.
