On the eve of his visit to Uzhhorod in Ukraine’s west, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has made another outrageous statement about Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, claiming that life in Kyiv is “totally normal”.

Details: During a press conference following a visit by the Slovak government to the village of Kamenica nad Cirochou in Slovakia’s east, Fico was asked why he would be meeting with Ukraine’s prime minister in Uzhhorod rather than Kyiv.

When the journalist pointed out that in Kyiv Fico would be able to see the consequences of the war firsthand, he responded: “Do you really believe there is a war in Kyiv? I hope you’re not being serious… Life is perfectly normal there.”

Quote: “Why would I go to Kyiv when I can meet the prime minister in Uzhhorod? I don’t see any difference.”

Another journalist, recalling Fico’s earlier suggestion that Ukraine would have to give up some of its territory to Russia, asked which part of Slovakia he would cede to Russia. Fico dismissed this, saying he did not talk to media outlets that are co-owned by George Soros, before leaving the press conference.

The Slovakian prime minister’s comments about life in Kyiv being “calm” came on the very day that Russia launched its latest missile attack on Ukraine, damaging apartments and cars in the capital and injuring 22 people, one of whom is in intensive care.

Robert Fico had already made a series of controversial statements about Ukraine ahead of the meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart on 24 January. He has specifically stated that he will oppose Ukraine’s NATO membership in any way he can. Fico’s remarks about “territorial compromise” drew criticism from Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry.
