US Vice President Kamala Harris has stated that issues such as supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression should not be a matter of political games in the US.

Details: Harris noted that the issue of supporting Ukraine and the US’s role in this regard is also a question of who the United States considers itself to be.

“We have been a global leader in the past and now on certain fundamental democratic principles, including sovereignty and territorial integrity… When we speak about America’s role in supporting Ukraine, we must be unwavering and cannot afford to play political games. There is no room for them now,” Kamala Harris stressed.

She noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin has demonstrated numerous times in recent years that he is utterly hostile to democratic principles, and the death of the imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny is yet another proof of this.

Harris added that the White House firmly believes that a substantial majority of Congress members from both parties support further assistance to Ukraine.

“This is not about elections – it’s about who we are and what kind of country we want to be,” the vice president stressed.

She was also asked whether the US has a Plan B in case the political disputes in Congress further delay the decision.

“There is only Plan A, to ensure that Ukraine gets what it needs,” Harris responded.

The official said she believes that the bill will be passed when it comes to a vote in the House of Representatives.

“I am also convinced that there is a bipartisan consensus in the US Congress that this is a barbaric aggression by Moscow and that it needs a response that includes helping our friends and supporting those who resist aggression,” Harris said.

Background:

  • For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the US Congress’s positive decision to allocate funds for further military assistance to Ukraine is now a vital issue.
  • The US House of Representatives went on recess until the end of February without considering the package bill with funding for Ukraine already passed in the Senate.
  • The House also introduced a bill with less aid for Ukraine than the amount proposed by US President Joe Biden.
