Details: The resolution was approved unanimously by 107 Lithuanian Seimas MPs.

The resolution calls on the European Commission to urgently develop a bill prohibiting the import of grain of Russian and Belarusian origin into the EU, as well as other European institutions, to support such a ban.

The Lithuanian Seimas also requests that the European Commission ensure cooperation and coordination among EU member states in order to effectively and uniformly apply this ban across the EU.

Separately, the resolution proposes to consider the possibility of banning imports into the EU of food products of Russian and Belarusian origin and, if necessary, regulating the flows of agricultural products to use Ukrainian products.

In the event of unfavourable market prices, the Seim proposes for the European Commission to apply a system of interventions for the purchase of surplus grain in Ukraine, which will support grain prices and guarantee the income of producers.

Background:

  • According to media reports, the European Commission is expected to submit a proposal next week for quantitative restrictions on grain imports from Russia and Belarus.
  • In February, the Latvian parliament adopted a temporary import ban on agricultural products from Russia and Belarus until at least July 2025. The Polish Sejm also adopted a resolution calling for sanctions to be imposed on imports of Russian and Belarusian food products.
