Russian frozen assets better be spent on weapons for Ukraine, not on its recovery – Poland’s Foreign Minister

Radosław Sikorski, Polish Foreign Affairs Minister, has stated that Russian funds in the EU better be spent on Ukraine’s defence instead of its rebuilding.

Quote: “There was a political decision, though not legal yet, that the interest from the capital (Russian capital frozen by EU countries – ed.) will be used in favour of Ukraine.”

“I would like to go further. I believe that the aggressor must pay for the consequences of their aggression. Since we already know that Russia will not receive this money until it pays reparations to Ukraine, then they should better be spent on the prevention of the consequences of the aggression, on the protection of Ukraine, not only on its rebuilding,” Sikorski stressed.

He also approved of the EU’s decision to allocate an additional €5 billion for military support to Ukraine under the European Peace Facility.

“It means that what the countries supply Ukraine with will be returned, and those who do not provide aid for Ukraine will make their contributions (into the EPF). This means that every European country (except Hungary) will be involved in the scheme,” Sikorski explained.

Earlier, it was reported that the European Commission wanted to accelerate the approval of the mechanism which would allow using the income from frozen sovereign assets of Russia so that Ukraine could receive the first tranche of €2-3 billion in July.

Reportedly, US President Joe Biden wants the G7 countries to achieve progress concerning the plans to use arrested Russian assets in support for Ukraine before their summit in June 2024.
