Russian attack devastates part of Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design in Kyiv – photo

Part of the building of the Mykhailo Boichuk Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design was destroyed as a result of the Russian attack on Kyiv on Monday, 25 March. Two people were injured, and the sports hall, congress hall, and exhibition center were destroyed.

Quote: “Part of the building of the Mykhailo Boichuk Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design has been destroyed as a result of enemy air strikes on the capital. Together with rescuers and law enforcement officers, I am at the scene,” said the minister in his statement.

Karandieiev said that an air-raid warning was issued a few seconds before the first explosions, so students and teachers did not have enough time to go to a bomb shelter.

“Fortunately, missile wreckage landed on adjacent premises. The sports hall, congress hall, and exhibition centre have been completely destroyed. Early reports indicate that there are no casualties,” he added. 

Additionally, the premises of the departments and auditoriums of the educational institution have been damaged.

The acting minister reported that the head of the laboratory was injured, and she has been taken to the nearest hospital.

The Mykhailo Boichuk Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design is a higher artistic educational institution founded in December 1999 based on the Kyiv Art and Industrial Technical School.

Names of Ukrainian painters Marfa Tymchenko, Maria Prymachenko, Ivan Honchar, Paraskeva Vlasenko, and other Ukrainian artists are connected with the establishment and development of the educational institution. Works by students and teachers of the Boichuk Academy are found in collections of museums in Germany, Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, the Czech Republic, and many other countries.

Background:

  • On the morning of 25 March, an air-raid warning was issued in Kyiv, with explosions thundering in the city a few moments later. The city authorities have reported a missile attack that resulted in wreckage falling in the Pecherskyi, Solomianskyi and Dniprovskyi districts.
  • Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk, Commander of Ukraine’s Air Force, reported that air defence units destroyed two Russian ballistic missiles fired on Kyiv from temporarily occupied Crimea on the morning of 25 March.
