Hong Kong is to host eight competitions at the 2025 National Games, alongside events in Macau and Guangdong. It is the first time the city has co-hosted the Chinese sporting contest, which will see its 15th edition next year.
At its inaugural meeting in Guangzhou on Thursday, the Organising Committee of the 15th National Games revealed that Hong Kong will host rugby sevens, beach volleyball, golf, triathlons, men’s handball and men’s under-22 basketball, as well as track cycling and bowling.
Most events will be staged in Guangdong across 13 days from November 9 next year. Macau will host table tennis, 3×3 basketball and women’s volleyball.
At Thursday’s event, Chief Executive John Lee said the government will adhere to the principle of “simple, safe and wonderful” in its approach to the games, using existing venues as well as the soon-to-be-completed Kai Tak Sports Park.
Lee added that the triathlon events will take place along the Central harbourfront and Victoria Harbour.
Zhang Xin of the General Administration of Sport of China said that marathon and road cycling events would go through all three territories in order to promote integration. “These events are popular and highly competitive, they make for a good spectacle. So compatriots in Hong Kong and Macau can enjoy all these games at their doorsteps,” he said, according to RTHK.
Para games
The 9th National Special Olympic Games and 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities will also see Hong Kong host contests between December 9 and 15 next year.
The city will host boccia, wheelchair fencing, para table tennis and para dance sport, a government press release said on Thursday.
