Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has signed a decree establishing the Council for Cooperation with Ukraine, a public body that will deal with bilateral relations and reconstruction.

Details: Kowal said he would head the newly created Council for Cooperation with Ukraine. “This will be a public body that will include representatives of science, business, government and local authorities. This composition will be formed in the coming weeks,” he added.

The Council will have working groups, cooperate with Polish think tanks and have offices in the regions, said Kowal. He clarified that the structure and functions of the body will be determined in more detail soon.

The Polish government commissioner explained that the idea is to create an institution “that will take a more holistic approach to Polish-Ukrainian relations”.

“We assume that they are unique, not only because of historical issues but also because of Poland’s involvement in helping Ukraine, which is being defended, and Poland’s role in the process of its recovery,” Kowal said.

Pawel Kowal, former Polish ambassador to Ukraine and member of the Sejm, was appointed the Polish government`s commissioner for Ukraine’s recovery at the beginning of the year, after Prime Minister Donald Tusk came to power.

Among the current issues in bilateral relations between Warsaw and Kyiv is the blocking of the border by Polish hauliers and farmers, which is damaging the economies of both countries.
