Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT) has reported that Russian spies have entered the country amongst Ukrainian refugees.

Details: According to the report, the alleged spies entered Romania as Ukrainian refugees.

The spies’ mission was to gather information related to defence and security. There have also been attempts to obtain critical information about Romania’s assistance to Ukraine.

The Russian assets were also looking for information on military exercises in Romania and the personnel stationed there.

The report also includes examples of disinformation tactics targeting the Romanian army and its officials.

CSAT has identified numerous vulnerabilities that Romania has been subject to as a result of this espionage operation. These include escalations in military incidents, cyber-strikes by Russia, and sabotage of aid shipments to Ukraine.

G4 Media, which has also evaluated the report, said “the Russian Federation was the main political and military participant involved in all security issues in the region”.

According to the report, Russia continues to create significant military threats in order to maintain and strengthen its influence over Black Sea states and realise its geopolitical ambitions.

It was reported in late March that Supo, the Finnish security police, believes that Russia remains the most serious threat to the country’s national security.

Meanwhile in Austria, a meeting of the National Security Council was convened in response to the detention of Egisto Ott, a former employee of the now-defunct Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counterterrorism (BVT), on suspicion of espionage.
