Russia no longer uses Crimean Bridge to supply weapons – The Independent

Russia has been using overland routes in the occupied part of Ukraine’s east to supply weapons to the line of contact after multiple attacks by Ukraine on the Crimean (Kerch) Bridge.

Details: The Independent, citing data from the largest Ukrainian private intelligence agency Molfar, stated that analysis of satellite images shows minimal traffic on the Crimean Bridge and “may therefore no longer represent an effective military target for Ukraine’s ammunition-strapped troops”.

Images taken by Maxar satellite specialists, analysed by Molfar and sent to The Independent, show that almost no military freight trains have been running on the bridge’s railway line for three months.

During this period, from 29 February, only one Russian freight train carrying about 55 fuel wagons was observed crossing the bridge.

As the analysis notes, Russia has significantly reduced its use of the bridge after Ukraine attacked it and blew up a section of the road and railway tracks on 17 July 2023.

Background:

  • On 8 October 2022, an explosion rang out on the Crimean Bridge, partially destroying it.
  • In July 2023, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Crimean Bridge was a legitimate target for Ukraine because Russian invaders were using it to transport weapons, and that this target should be neutralised.
  • In May 2024, the Russians claimed that a homemade explosive device equivalent to 10 tonnes of TNT was used to blow up the Crimean Bridge in October 2022. It was based on solid rocket fuel concealed in reels of polyethylene film.
