Anton Hofreiter, a politician from the German Green Party, has called on Ukraine’s allies to no longer prevent it from attacking Russian territory with Western weapons.

Details: “This is about protecting the Ukrainian population. Therefore, we should not prevent Ukraine from using the weapons it has received to defend itself against Russian fighters in Russian airspace,” Hofreiter said in an interview with the newspapers of the Funke Media Group.

“International law allows a state that has been attacked to attack military targets in the aggressor’s country. This is part of self-defence. After all, the Russian army is bombarding the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, which has a population of one million, day and night from its territory, including with glide bombs that strike in just 40 seconds,” he said.

Background: Recently, the New York Times reported that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wanted to ensure that Ukraine was allowed to strike Russian territory with US weapons. He wanted to convince President Joe Biden to lift the restrictions.

On the eve of French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Germany, Hofreiter called on both governments to expand their strong support for Ukraine. Germany has the money and resources to better provide Ukraine with weapons and ammunition. “In the serious situation Ukraine is in, the provision of individual weapons systems across the board cannot be ruled out,” he added.

He called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to start a dialogue with France on the role of French nuclear weapons in European defence. “Macron has already proposed this several times. Unfortunately, his proposals have not yet been accepted,” Hofreiter criticised.

As is known, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes that a common European defence cannot include a nuclear component, as recently proposed by French leader Emmanuel Macron.
