Difficult situation in Kyiv due to Russian attacks: some districts have no power for 20 hours – Director of Energy Research Centre

Due to the large concentration of critical infrastructure that takes up part of the electricity consumption, some of Kyiv’s  districts have no power for about 20 hours.

Details: He says that every day, Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s national power company, informs local oblast power distribution companies of the consumption limits, part of which is immediately allocated to critical infrastructure, and the rest is distributed among consumers.

“In Kyiv, this problem is multiplied by 2, because the city’s critical infrastructure consumes twice as much as the national average. As a result, private consumers and businesses are left with significantly less, the schedule becomes more complicated, and I know that in some parts of the city there is no electricity for 20 hours. That’s the way it is,’ he said.

Kharchenko said that Kyiv was in a tough spot and expressed hope that a new methodology for calculating outage schedules will soon come into effect.

Why it is important: Due to the Russian attacks on the territory of Ukraine, and in particular on thermal power plants, there is an insufficient amount of power in Ukraine to ensure its continuous supply. To that end, Ukrenergo has imposed power outage schedules in all oblasts of the country.

Background:

The head of Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, said that on the night of 7-8 June, an additional unit at the nuclear power plant would be put into operation, which would briefly improve the situation in the country’s power system.
