Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan believes that the Peace Summit in Switzerland “could have been more result-oriented” if Russia were present.

Details: Fidan indicated that the summit attendees in Switzerland are aware of Ukraine’s Peace Formula and mentioned Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s ultimatum regarding “peace talks”.

“Regardless of the proposed content and conditions, these are important steps and a glimmer of hope to start with. However, each side considers the actions of the other to be a continuation of a broader military effort,” he stated.

The Turkish foreign minister added that if Russia were present, “this summit could have been more result-oriented”.

“We believe that there is a growing need for a comprehensive and inclusive strategy that uses diplomacy and negotiations to ensure the implementation of measures already taken,” Fidan said, citing the grain corridor agreement brokered by Türkiye as an example.

Background:

  • Russia refused to attend the conference in Switzerland, labelling the event biassed and the host country “openly hostile”.
  • However, the Ukrainian President’s Office has previously confirmed that Ukraine is ready to invite a Russian representative to the second Peace Summit, who will be presented with a “joint plan” agreed upon by the majority of the world’s nations.
