Ukrainian documentary maker and war correspondent Mstyslav Chernov is among the global film industry representatives who have been invited to join the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this year.
The Academy has extended the invitation to 487 artists, including actors, directors, costume designers and film festival directors, a statement on the organisation’s website reads.
Those who accept the invitation will be able to take part in the voting for the next Oscars. If all the invitees join the Academy, it will have 9,934 voting members.
“We are thrilled to welcome this year’s class of new members to the Academy. These remarkably talented artists and professionals from around the world have made a significant impact on our filmmaking community,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Young.
Mstyslav Chernov, who made the documentary 20 Days in Mariupol, received an invitation in the Documentary category. The film, shot in a Ukrainian city besieged by Russian forces, won an Oscar this year.
Also invited in the Documentary category is director Sergei Loznitsa, who was expelled from the Ukrainian Film Academy in March 2022, partly because his films were featured in the Russian film festival From Lviv to the Urals. In May 2022, during a speech at the Cannes International Film Festival, Loznitsa condemned the boycott of Russian culture during the war in Ukraine.
For reference: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is an organisation of film professionals founded on 11 May 1927. Its main purpose is to promote cinema.
The Academy organises the world’s most prestigious film awards, the Oscars, which have been awarded annually for 95 years. The winners are voted for by members of the Academy.
