10-year-old Ukrainian athlete and his family killed in Russian attack on Kyiv

Pravda Ukraine

On 8 July, a Russian missile struck an apartment block in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, killing 10-year-old Maksym Symaniuk, his younger sister Anastasiia, and their mother, Zoriana, 40.

The death of the family was reported by the Ukrainian Karate Federation. The boy was professionally involved in this sport.

“Maksym Symaniuk. A Russian missile struck his home today, killing him, his mother, and his sister. Maksym will be forever ten years old. [We extend our] Sincere sympathies to his father, the Champion club where Maksym trained, and his coach,” the federation noted.

Maksym and his sister were both professionally involved in sports. Maksym, in particular, did karate training, while Anastasiia was a gymnast.

“A Russian missile killed a whole family. Today, Maksym Simaniuk had to accompany my son to a sports camp. They were both involved in the same sports club. One of the compartment’s spaces is now empty.

Everything is destroyed, including plans, unmet hopes, and little lives.

There is no forgiveness for these inhumans who deliberately kill Ukrainian children,” wrote Alona Romanenko.

Lina Teslenko stated on her social media sites that her daughter Iryna and Maksym were classmates. Following the attack, the children sought to contact Maksym, hoping he might answer.

“I didn’t dare to tell Iryna yesterday that Maksym had passed away. She asked many questions before going to bed: what kind of injuries do people sustain when under the rubble? How many hours can you survive without air? Why is the rubble being dismantled for so long? Maybe Maksym’s phone is out of battery or was crushed, so that is why he is not responding?…

How do you answer these questions, especially if you already know the answer?”, the woman wrote on her Facebook page.

Unfortunately, neither Maksym nor Anastasiia survived. At first, rescuers found their mother alive under the wreckage, but she succumbed to her injuries.

Friends and family members post messages of condolence to their relatives.

“Today, our hearts are brimming with anguish. Maksym Simaniuk, 10, his mother, and sister were killed in a strike in Kyiv yesterday.

Their happiness and delight illuminated all around them. It is difficult to accept that they are no longer with us. We genuinely sympathise with their loved ones,” wrote Liubov Riabko.

Volodymyr Boiev, the coach with whom Maksym was training, also reacted to the death of his ward and published the story on his Instagram.
