The alleged perpetrators were arrested in the Balearic Islands and the province of Andalusia. Searches were conducted at their homes, and computer and documentary materials were seized.

Spanish investigators believe that those arrested are part of the hacktivist group NoName057(16), which emerged following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and declared its goal to “respond to hostile and overtly anti-Russian actions by Western Russophobes.”

The group’s primary activity involves carrying out distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on the websites of government and private organisations in countries that support Ukraine.

Background:

  • Last month, the General Dynamics division, specifically Santa Barbara Systems – a Spain-based company involved in repairing Leopard tanks for delivery to Ukraine – reported a cyberattack by NoName057(16).
  • The investigation into the arrested hackers in Spain is being coordinated by the specialised prosecutor’s office. The Spanish Civil Guard has also announced that it continues to investigate along several lines of enquiry to further identify the participants in the attacks.
  • NATO has already warned Russia about possible consequences of further cyberattacks and other hybrid attacks on member states.
