Ukrainian fencer Kharlan defeats Azerbaijani opponent, previously representing Russia, on way to 2024 Olympic quarter finals

Ukrainian fencer Olha Kharlan has competed in her second match of the individual sabre tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Details: In the round of 16, Kharlan, 32, defeated Azerbaijan’s Anna Bashta with a crushing score of 15:6. Harlan’s opponent in the quarter finals will be announced later.
It is worth noting that Anna Bashta represented Russia, her country of birth, until 2019 before switching her sports citizenship five years ago.
Olha Kharlan is an Olympic champion in Beijing 2008 (team event) and a bronze medallist in London 2012 and Rio 2016 (individual events). In addition, the Ukrainian holds a silver medal of the team tournament in Rio 2016.
Background: In the round of 32 at the 2024 Olympics, Kharlan’s teammates Olena Kravatska and Alina Komashchuk were defeated. Thus, they are no longer in contention for individual medals in Paris.
