Quote: “Why was this first [peace] summit so important? We saw the number of countries – more than 100 countries – that support President Zelenskyy’s peace formula. This is the basis for a joint plan. But the president says that we are ready to hear from all responsible countries that respect our independence, our territorial integrity, and our sovereignty.
And I can tell you that during Indian Prime Minister Modi’s last visit, he said very clearly that India will never support any proposal that includes any compromise on Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Hearing this from a BRICS member state is very important.
Ramaphosa [Cyril, President of South Africa] has visited Ukraine with African leaders. Now Modi has been here. There have been several meetings in Saudi Arabia and several meetings with the President of Brazil… The only thing that remains is for our President to meet with the leader of China. But I am confident that this will happen. Because even China’s declared position that it takes a neutral position implies this. We have seen how many times the Kremlin dictator has met with the Chinese leader. I think that even for a neutral position, it is very necessary for this meeting to take place. And we hope that it will take place.”
Details: Yermak also said that the venue for the next Summit on the Ukrainian Peace Formula has not yet been determined, but “it would be significant if it were held in one of the countries of the global south”.
Background:
- In June, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia was trying to prevent the Peace Summit from taking place in Switzerland and that China was helping it to do so.
- Zelenskyy also suggested that China could prepare its own “peace plan” if it did not share the universal principles laid down in the Ukrainian “peace formula”.
