Ukraine’s Antonov Company expects confiscation of Russian An-124 Ruslan aircraft in Canada

Ukrainian aircraft manufacturer Antonov Company anticipates that next year, the Russian An-124 cargo plane will be confiscated in Canada, and the process of its transfer to Ukraine will commence.

Details: Antonov’s management expects the Canadian trial concerning the confiscation of the Russian aircraft to continue for another six months. Following this, they anticipate the Canadian government will seize the plane, assess its value and then transfer it to Ukraine as military aid.

At the request of the Canadian government, Antonov’s specialists conducted an inspection of the Russian aircraft and reported that it was in excellent condition.

The Russian An-124 Ruslan became stranded at a Canadian airfield in February 2022 after the country closed its airspace to Russian aircraft. The owner of Volga-Dnepr, the firm that operates the aircraft, has been sanctioned by the Canadian government, allowing for the potential confiscation of his property under Canadian law.

Background: This June, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once again vowed to hand over the Russian plane to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Germany has yet to establish a mechanism for the confiscation of three Russian An-124 Ruslan aircraft currently stranded at an airfield in Leipzig.
