Details: Commenting on Putin’s early September remarks about “supporting” Harris in the presidential election, the Russian foreign minister said Putin was “joking” and added that “he has a good sense of humour.”
“I don’t see any difference either in the current election campaign or in future election campaigns in the United States for a long time to come,” Lavrov said.
He claimed that Joe Biden “has long been unable to lead the country”, noting that some “deep state” actors are doing so instead. He also mentioned that Donald Trump imposed “quite serious” sanctions on Russia during his first term.
“Ultimately, we have concluded that we must rely on ourselves. We will not depend on a ‘good uncle’ to arrive at the White House or another Western capital to improve our situation,” the Russian foreign minister concluded.
Background:
- In early September, Putin said that Joe Biden was his favourite candidate in the US election, but since he withdrew from the race and backed Kamala Harris, Russia would also support her.
- The White House has advised Moscow to stop interfering in the US presidential election and criticised the Kremlin leader’s public discussions about “supporting” certain candidates.
- But Trump himself admitted that he had been “very offended” by Putin’s words.
