Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran, has stated that he seeks negotiations with Western countries regarding the Russian war in Ukraine and has allegedly never approved of Russian aggression.

Details: Pezeshkian called Russian war against Ukraine “aggression” and denied the claims that his country has been supplying Russia with ballistic missiles since the moment of his entry into office in July 2024. He also promised not to do it in the future, even though he didn’t mention the drones Iran provides for Russia.

Pezeshkian said that Iran was “willing to sit down with the Europeans and the Americans to have a dialogue and negotiations” amid allegations that Iran supplies Russia with missiles.

Updated: European Council President Charles Michel met with Pezeshkian in New York and during the meeting expressed concerns about Iran’s arms sales to Russia, the destabilisation of the region through proxies, detained EU citizens, the nuclear programme and the human rights situation to the president.

Laurence Norman, a correspondent of The Wall Street Journal, learned from a source that Michel told Pezeshkian that relations between Iran and Europe were at an all-time low.

He pressed the Iranian president on issues of human rights, the nuclear programme, regional destabilisation, missile deliveries and European prisoners in Iran.

Previously: Pezeshkian became the President of Iran after his predecessor Ebrahim Raisi died in a plane crash.

Background:

  • Western media reported that Iran has supplied Russia with short-range ballistic missiles. Some sources reported the number of over 200 missiles.
  • Reuters, which was the first agency to report about the preparation of a ballistic missile delivery from Iran to Russia, stated that this may be about the Fath-360 – a system which launches ballistic missiles with a maximum range of 120 km and with a warhead which weighs over 150 kg.
  • The National Security Council of the White House stated that if Iran has supplied or will ever supply Russia with ballistic missiles, it would be a “dramatic escalation”.
  • Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, admitted that Iran had supplied Russia with Iran-made ballistic missiles it needed for attacks on Ukraine.
