Ukraine responds to Czech president’s suggestion that Ukrainian territories could be exchanged for peace

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected the idea that some Ukrainian territory could be left under Russian occupation in order to end the war.

Details: The Foreign Ministry stressed that Ukraine is following the Peace Formula, which underscores the importance of “the withdrawal of Russian occupying forces from the sovereign territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders”.

Quote: “We emphasise that there can be no middle-ground solutions when it comes to human lives, freedom, common values, justice for Russia’s crimes, and the restoration of international peace and security. In this context, temporary solutions will not bring lasting peace but will merely postpone war.”

The ministry urged the world to work together to implement the Peace Formula and put pressure on Russia “to coerce it into a just peace, liberate Ukraine’s territories, and restore respect for international law”.

The statement concludes with the assertion that “this is a realistic scenario that we can achieve through joint efforts”.

The Foreign Ministry did not specify what its comment referred to, but Czech President Petr Pavel said yesterday that Ukraine should accept the possibility that some of its territory may be “temporarily” under Russian control after the war is over.

It is worth noting that the Czech president has consistently maintained this view. He has already stated that he thinks a temporary “compromise” on the Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia is possible if it would end the war.
