Quote: “And in an uncertain world, it is vital that we test our defence, and that we strengthen our defence so that our adversaries know that NATO is ready and is able to respond to any threat.”

Details: According to Rutte, the drills will not include the employment of military weapons; however, some 2,000 personnel will simulate operations in which military jets transport American nuclear bombs.

The exercise will feature about 60 aircraft from 13 countries, including F-35A fighters and B-52 bombers.

The major manoeuvres will take place over the United Kingdom, the North Sea, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

The training will last about two weeks.

Background:

  • The newly elected Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, stressed that the Allies currently see no direct risks associated with using nuclear weapons and advised them not to pay attention to Russia’s nuclear threats.
  • The EU stated that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin’s fresh threats to use nuclear weapons on non-nuclear countries are yet another example of his irresponsible behaviour, and they will not influence the European Union’s decision to continue to support Ukraine.
  • In September, Vladimir Putin made changes to Russia’s nuclear deterrence doctrine.
