US on reports of North Korean troops joining Russia’s war against Ukraine: sign of Russia’s desperation, not strength

The United States has announced that it cannot currently verify reports of North Korean troops being deployed in Russia’s war against Ukraine. However, if such reports are confirmed, it would indicate the Kremlin’s desperation.
Source: Voice of America, citing Sean Savett, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, as reported by European Pravda
Details: The spokesperson noted that if North Korea joins Russia’s war against Ukraine, the United States will discuss the consequences of “such a dramatic step” with its allies and partners.
Savett also noted that such a move would also “indicate a new level of desperation for Russia as it continues to suffer significant casualties on the battlefield in its brutal war against Ukraine”.
He stated that if Russia is indeed forced to turn to North Korea for manpower, it is a sign of desperation, not strength, on the part of the Kremlin.
Background:
- Ukraine’s spy chief, Kyrylo Budanov, reported earlier that about 11,000 North Korean troops could be deployed to the war zone in November.
- South Korean intelligence also noted that North Korean troops were being sent to Russia.
- Estonian intelligence believes that the participation of North Korean soldiers in the war on Moscow’s side will not change the situation on the battlefield.
- UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that if the participation of the North Korean military on the side of the Russian Federation in the war against Ukraine was confirmed, it would demonstrate the Kremlin’s “level of desperation”.
