Quote from Xi Jinping: “The conflict in Ukraine is prolonging (…) Therefore, we must firmly adhere to three principles: to prevent the expansion of the geography of hostilities; to prevent escalation, and to prevent provocations that increase tensions.”
Details: The Chinese president also emphasised the need to “de-escalate the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible and abandon the policy of adding fuel to the fire.”
Background:
- On October 22, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin discussed at the BRICS summit in Russia, the situation in Ukraine and “further contacts to continue dialogue” with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
- The Chinese authorities pay lip service to Ukraine’s territorial integrity but are not ready to condemn Russia’s invasion and actually oppose the war. Instead, China offered its own “peace plan,” and its leader, Xi Jinping, is negotiating with Putin to deepen the partnership.
- Commenting on the issue of strengthening military ties with Russia, given Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said “China is ready to cooperate with Russia… and promote our comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era.”
- UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps accused China of providing or preparing to provide Russia with lethal weapons for use in the war against Ukraine.
- US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said in September 2024 that China was directly assisting the Russian military apparatus by supporting its efforts to wage war against Ukraine.
