Ukraine to launch testing of 5G networks in 3 cities

The Ukrainian government amended the resolution on the use of radio frequencies and began testing the 5G network in three Ukrainian cities.

Details: The pilot initiative will run for two years in two phases, covering three cities. The purpose is to determine the interoperability of 5G with military equipment. This will be completed by NKEK, the national electro-communications coordinator and the Ukrainian State Centre for Radio Frequencies.
5G can carry data 10 times quicker than 4G, creating new options for transmitting vast amounts of information at rapid speeds. According to the plan, the full launch of 5G in Ukraine will occur before 2030.
Furthermore, the new law permits operators to utilise the 2100 MHz frequency not only for 3G, but also for 2G or 4G, and the television frequencies 694-862 MHz will be made available for mobile communications.
Background:
- During the pandemic of 2020, the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers agreed a strategy for Ukraine’s development of 5G technology.
- Earlier, the Ministry of Digital Transformation announced the commencement of a 5G trial programme in 2024.
