Tens of thousands of Tung Chung residents were left without water on Sunday night, with the Water Supplies Department (WSD) racing to fix a 1.2 metre diameter burst pipe. The supply is expected to resume on Monday morning.

At least ten housing estates, hotels and a hospital were affected as a section of Lantau’s Cheung Tung Road was cordoned off for the emergency repair works.

The incident occurred near Siu Ho Wan Water Treatment Works, with the water supply to the area severed at around 10pm on Sunday. The airport and Discovery Bay are unaffected.

The WSD apologised for the disruption: “The WSD had immediately arranged water wagons and water tanks to provide temporary water supply to the residents and shops in need,” a Sunday press statement read.

“Meanwhile, the WSD had contacted the respective District Council members and the Care Team to understand the needs of the affected residents and shops and provide assistance as and when appropriate.”
