2024 Press Freedom Awards: HKFP shortlisted in journalistic independence category
Hong Kong Free Press
Hong Kong Free Press has been nominated for a journalistic independence prize at the 2024 Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Press Freedom Awards.
“Despite the enactment of the National Security Law and the shutdown of numerous media in the territory, HKFP remains one of the rare media covering subjects considered taboo by Beijing, including human rights, politics, and trials of political figures,” the free expression NGO said.
The December 4 ceremony will be held at Washington DC’s National Museum of Women in the Arts.
In all, 18 journalists and journalist teams, two media outlets and five photojournalists from 22 countries have been shortlisted. “They will be honoured for their significant contribution to the defence and promotion of press freedom worldwide,” RSF said.
Other nominees in the independence category include Stanis Bujakera Tshiamala of the Democratic Republic of Congo, India’s Ravish Kumar, Russia’s Alsu Kurmasheva, and Anora Sarkorova from Tajikistan.
HKFP recognition
With an impartial stance, transparent funding, and balanced coverage guided by a Trust Project-backed Ethics Code and Corrections Policy, HKFP was launched in 2015 amid press freedom concerns in Hong Kong. HKFP’s continued existence is reliant on the regular backing from a small circle of monthly donors, and the determination of its eight journalists.
It is the fifth time this year that HKFP has won, or has been shortlisted, for a journalism-related prize.
