Ukrainian journalist and filmmaker Nataliia Humeniuk nominated for International Press Freedom Awards

Ukrainian journalist and documentary filmmaker Nataliia Humeniuk has been shortlisted for the International Press Freedom Awards.

Details: The national Georgiy Gongadze Prize noted that Nataliia Humeniuk co-founded and managed Hromadske International and Hromadske TV for five years.
In addition, she founded the Public Interest Journalism Lab, which she currently heads.
Humeniuk is an active participant in The Reckoning Project, an international project that documents war crimes.
The data collected in the course of journalistic investigations can be used in trials of those who committed war crimes during the Russo-Ukrainian war.
The Reckoning Project conducted and published the results of one of the first investigations into the abduction of Ukrainian children by Russia.
Following this, in March 2023, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Russian ruler Vladimir Putin and Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova.
“The journalist has made several documentaries and books. Nataliia is the voice of Ukraine in such publications as The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The Rolling Stone and Die Zeit,” the Georgiy Gongadze Prize added.
Background:
- Earlier, Nataliia Humeniuk received an international award from the Free Media Awards for her coverage of Russia’s war against Ukraine, and was also a laureate of the Hanns-Joachim Friedrichs International Prize.
- Reporters Without Borders is an international non-governmental human rights organisation that annually recognises journalists and media for exceptional contributions to protecting or promoting press freedom around the world.
- RWB has consultative status with the United Nations, UNESCO, the Council of Europe and the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie.
- The competition jury consists of leading journalists and defenders of freedom of speech from around the world. They choose the winners in three categories: Courage, Influence and Independence.
- This year’s shortlist includes 18 journalists and journalist teams, two news agencies and five photojournalists from 22 countries.
- The award ceremony will take place on 3 December in Washington, DC.
- Earlier, Ukrainian war photographer Kostiantyn Liberov won the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award at the annual competition.
