October 2024 saw Russian forces suffer the most considerable monthly losses since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Source: Sir Tony Radakin, UK Chief of the Defence Staff, in an interview with the BBC on Sunday, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Radakin noted that Russian forces had suffered an average of around 1,500 casualties per day in October, both killed and wounded. He added that Russia’s total losses are nearing 700,000 since the invasion began in February 2022.
He stressed that the Russian people are paying an “extraordinary price” for invading Ukraine.
“Russia is about to suffer 700,000 people killed or wounded – the enormous pain and suffering that the Russian nation is having to bear because of Putin’s ambition,” the UK defence chief stressed.
Ukraine’s General Staff estimates that the total losses of Russian forces in Ukraine amount to almost 709,000 troops killed and wounded.
Radakin added that significant Russian losses had been incurred “for tiny increments of land”.
“There is no doubt that Russia is making tactical, territorial gains and that is putting pressure on Ukraine,” he admitted, adding that Russia devotes more than 40% of its public spending to defence and security.
Background:
- In September 2024, UK intelligence also pointed out a new record for the average daily losses of Russian forces in Ukraine for the entire period of the full-scale invasion.
- In a report this week, the General Staff of the Estonian Defence Forces noted the rapid offensive pace of the Russian forces. They are trying to seize as much territory as possible before the winter freeze.
