Ukrainian nuclear power plants reduce electricity production due to Russian strikes – IAEA

Ukraine’s three operational nuclear power plants (NPPs) have scaled back electricity production following the latest Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure, further undermining nuclear safety amid the ongoing war.

Quote from Grossi: “For a second time in less than two weeks, the Khmelnytskyi, Rivne and South Ukraine NPPs lowered their power levels as a precautionary step during widespread military activities in the country.”
Details: Grossi notes that nine reactors operating at these plants have had their power output reduced.
In addition, one reactor at Rivne NPP was disconnected from the grid.
Ukrainian NPPs continued to receive electricity from external sources, though Khmelnytskyi NPP lost connection with two power lines.
Quote from Grossi: “Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is extremely fragile and vulnerable, putting nuclear safety at great risk. Once again, I call for maximum military restraint in areas with major nuclear energy facilities and other sites on which they depend.”
“The IAEA will continue to assess the extent of damage to facilities and power lines that are essential for nuclear safety and security.”
