Major General Christian Freuding, the head of the Bundeswehr’s Situation Center Ukraine at the German Ministry of Defence, believes that Ukraine will lose Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast by early 2025.

Details: Freuding believes that “Russia now has the military initiative on all fronts, in all regions”, including the Donbas area, which has been the centre of hostilities for several months.

Quote: “Russia is attacking there with an almost unthinkable deployment of people and materiel,” the German general continued, highlighting the Russian forces’ heavy losses of up to 2,000 people every day.

For Ukraine, Freuding says, the situation is particularly critical in the city of Pokrovsk, Donetsk Oblast, which serves as a major transportation hub for Ukrainian forces.

“I believe that Pokrovsk will have to be abandoned at the end of the year or at the beginning of 2025,” he noted.

The German general also forecasts an escalation of hostilities in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, which is partially controlled by Ukrainian forces – particularly with the involvement of North Korean troops.

Background:

  • The Estonian defence forces’ intelligence centre said in October that Ukrainian forces may be forced to withdraw from Pokrovsk by the end of the year.
  • Earlier, Christian Freuding stated that Germany sees signs that the Russian army intends to attain sufficient capabilities by 2029 to launch a fresh attack, which may be against a NATO member state.
