Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede has stated that the island does not wish to be part of America or Denmark, but instead seeks independence.
Source: The Financial Times (FT), citing Egede in a statement at a press conference in Copenhagen on Friday, 10 January, as reported by European Pravda
Details: The FT cites Egede as saying that the island’s population does not want to be either Danes or Americans.
“We don’t want to be Danish, we don’t want to be American, we want to be Greenlandic,” he said.
At the same meeting, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledged that Greenland’s desire for independence was “legitimate and understandable”.
Frederiksen added that she wants to preserve the Kingdom of Denmark, which consists of Denmark, Greenland and the autonomous territory of the Faroe Islands.
“I personally believe that if we stand together, we are stronger in the global game,” she noted.
During the press conference, Egede stated that he was open to talking to US President-elect Donald Trump, who has expressed interest in gaining control of the Arctic island.
Background:
- Trump had previously refused to rule out the use of military or economic force to gain control of Greenland, calling it a matter of US national security.
- Frederiksen has since emphasised that Greenland belongs to its people and that she cannot envision a genuine attempt by the US to take the island by force.
- Several other European leaders also made it clear that Trump’s remarks were unacceptable.
