Seven police officers were among 12 people arrested over alleged money laundering involving around HK$10.5 million, Hong Kong police have said.
Four women and eight men were detained following their arrests in Sheung Shui, Fanling, Tuen Mun and Kwai Chung on Thursday on suspicion of money laundering from 2017 and 2024, police said in a statement.
The suspects, aged between 28 and 68, were accused of using 22 bank accounts to launder criminal proceeds.
Seven of the male arrestees were police officers, aged between 28 to 39 years old, the statement said, adding that all had been suspended.
Two of the officers were also arrested for alleged fraud after they rented out their owner-occupied mortgaged properties from 2019 to 2024.
“The police force places great importance on the integrity of its personnel, and any illegal actions by officers will not be tolerated, and will be strictly dealt with,” said the Chinese-language police statement.
Upon conviction, the maximum penalty for money laundering is a 14-year jail sentence and a fine of HK$5 million.
‘Upskirting’ police officer denied bail
Separately, a Hong Kong court has denied bail to a police officer who was arrested for allegedly taking upskirting photos and attempting to grab a firearm from a colleague.
The police officer’s case was mentioned in Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning, local media outlets reported.
The off-duty officer allegedly tried to grab his colleague’s firearm inside a police station where he was taken to after being caught taking upskirting photos on an escalator in Tsim Sha Tsui on Wednesday afternoon.
The 39-year-old was charged with one count of voyeurism and one count of possession of arms or ammunition without licence.
The judge denied the request of bail by the defendant and the case has been adjourned to March 13 for further investigation.
Under Hong Kong law, the maximum penalty for voyeurism is five years in jail, while a conviction of possession of arms or ammunition without licence faces a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment.
